Diet Related

diet related dog training in nottingham

One of the key side effects from a poor diet is hyperactivity. Hyperactivity can have many underlying causes but one of the commonest is diet. Some dog foods are not formulated for optimum quality and suitability, they are formulated for maximum profit! A good quality canine diet should posses a suitable protein and fat source, an easily digestible carbohydrate source a suitable fibre and a balanced mix of vitamins and minerals. It should also contain beneficial supplements for optimum health and wellbeing.

Unfortunately, many of the large well-known pet food manufacturers supplement protein, fat and digestible carbs with various hard to digest cereals such as Wheat, Barley, Oats, Maize and Soya. These ingredients can be classed as padding or fillers as they are lacking in good nutritional benefits but are a cheap alternative. Some manufacturers also use sugar in their products, this can produce bouts of extreme energy bursts (sugar rushes) in your dog.

Protein derived from cereal encourages the uptake of Tyrosine, which is the precursor to the main neurotransmitters one of which is Adrenalin. We perhaps all know the effect Adrenalin can have on the body it is the main component in the ‘Flight Mechanism’ of animals. A poor protein source will also inhibit the uptake of Tryptophan. Tryptophan is the precursor to Serotonin which is labeled as the calming neurotransmitter. Synthesis of serotonin in the brain depends on the availability of the amino acid Tryptophan, which is serotonin's precursor. Put simply, serotonin is a brain chemical, which acts as a messenger operating between nerve cells. Correct levels must be maintained in order to balance mood and behaviour.

If your dog was bred from a poorly nourished bitch and the breeder was more interested in profit than a healthy brood of pups it is quite likely that your dog will suffer from a retarded development due to poor diet and nutrition.
I find puppies easier to train and willing to learn if they have been nourished correctly before birth and during puppyhood.

Sometimes the simple act of changing the dog’s diet can influence the behaviour of your dog, to a much calmer state. Visit my shop to look at a high-quality grain free dog food, to aid with creating a calmer balanced dog.
