Stress Related

Stress and anxiety is the main underlying reason why my services are called upon so often. As humans we should understand more regarding stress than any other animal on the planet! We face stress and anxiety daily whether that be running late to work, getting the kids ready for school, sorting out personal issues with family and friends, trying to make ends meet when finances are tight, etc ...

To give you some idea of the stresses faced by ‘Man’s Best Friend’ here is a ‘Canine Stress / Anxiety Model’ that I’m sure you can add to if you have a long hard think about what your dog has to face (put up with) on a daily basis!

Stress Related Behaviours

Stress and anxiety related behaviours manifest themselves in many ways. I like to call them ‘Displacement Behaviours’ because the behaviour you witness is the effect or side effect of frustration being experienced by your dog. For example, in the human world if we are having an argument with someone, whom you perceive to be in the wrong but won't admit it, we can get so frustrated that we lose our temper, start shouting, gesticulating and in some cases hit out! Hitting out is just what a dog does when it snaps or bites!

The following diagram demonstrates some of the physical signs that can be observed when a dog is exposed to stress:

If you recognise some or all the responses to stress on the above diagram then you may need my help to understand why they are happening and what we can do to reduce or eradicate the responses. Let’s not blame the owner or the dog, let’s build a new understanding of each other’s needs, work together so we can exist in harmony.

If the body is exposed to excessive levels of stress on a regular basis then the levels of Cortisol (the stress hormone) will have a detrimental affect on the health of the being - Dog or Human!

‘If we recognise when and why our dog is stressed, we can defuse conflict situations or prevent them from occurring in the first place.” Clarissa von Reinhardt - ‘Stress In Dogs’ 2007.

The effects of stress can be very subtle or really obvious. If in doubt consult a professional (don’t guess).
